When designing a deck, an often overlooked part is functionality. Having a deck that looks great is good and all but a deck that utilizes every square foot is equally important.

When designing a new deck for your backyard, make sure that you can take advantage of all the space you have. Too many deck builders have poor design skills and build decks that look great but are not effective with your valuable real estate.

Pay careful attention to the space you have. The larger the space is the more creative features you can add. When working with a small space, every area needs the utmost of attention. If there is a staircase, where is it going to go so that you can still use the rest of the deck to its full potential? Is there space to either side of the deck that could be used? Make sure that it is used. The less levels to your deck the better. Every time you add a new level to your deck you loose space (unless you are building multiple story decks). Stairs need to be introduced which waste space. Only have different levels to increase functionality.
